Mohammed al-Sudani was named the official candidate of the Coordination Framework bloc, a coalition made up of Shiite political parties backed by Tehran and its allies.

The Iraqi protesters are reportedly supporters of the influential Shi’ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

The interim prime minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimicalled for calm and moderation, and asked that they be withdrawn immediately, through a statement.

At the same time, he requested that they “preserve public and private property” since Parliament “represents the power of the Law and of the people.”

“The security forces will undertake to protect the country’s institutions and international delegations, and to prevent any attempt to violate security and order,” indicated in the text.
