The north of the Philippines was shaken by a violent earthquake on Wednesday. At least four people were killed. One victim was a 25-year-old construction worker who was buried by a collapsing building that was being worked on, civil protection said. At least 60 people were injured by collapsing buildings and landslides.
According to the Institute for Volcanology and Seismology of the Philippines (Phivolcs), the earthquake had a magnitude of 7. The epicenter was the province of Abra, 335 kilometers north of the capital Manila. There was no tsunami warning.
Numerous buildings and bridges were also damaged, said the mayor of Lagangilang. In some affected areas, power and radio signals failed. “We feel aftershocks every 15 minutes,” provincial vice governor Joy Bernos said on Philippine television.
The tremors were felt as far away as the metropolis of Manila, where people were evacuated from homes and offices. Authorities evacuated several high-rise towers. The operation of the elevated railway in Greater Manila was also discontinued as a precaution.
