More than 1,000 people rescued from the Mediterranean are awaiting disembarkation

A total of 1,035 people, including a 20-day-old baby, have been rescued in the central Mediterranean in recent days by the humanitarian ships Sea Watch3, Ocean Viking and Geo Barents and are now waiting in port to ship. disembark.

After the latest operations, the ship of the German humanitarian organization Marine Watch sails with 439 shipwrecked on board, the Ocean Viking of the French organization SOS Mediterranee with 387, and the Geo Barents of the organization Doctors Without Borders. MSF) has 209 members, the organizations say on social media.

According to MSF, the latest call for help from Alarm Phone, a hotline for migrants at sea, resulted in the rescue of 20 people who were on a “small speedboat in danger.”

Half of those rescued aboard the Geo Barents are “underage, and the youngest is only 20 days old,” the organization said in a statement.

“Everyone deserves to be safe and our team will continue to help people in danger,” he added.

Sea Watch previously wrote that “439 people needed and were entitled to a safe port of landing,” referring to the fact that these migrants survived the Mediterranean crossing but “were at sea for several days in extreme temperatures.”

The message from the German organization was accompanied by a video in which the head of mission explains the difficult conditions on board after five rescue operations in less than 26 hours.

SOS Mediterranee has also urged European authorities to allow 387 people to land on board Ocean Viking.

“Many are exhausted and showing signs of emotional distress after spending more than 10 hours at sea,” he said.

In addition, some 2,000 people have arrived on the Italian coast since last weekend, mostly on their own in unreliable boats, many of whom needed the help of Italian security forces as they were in danger.

This was the case with a drifting fishing boat carrying 674 migrants, which was rescued on Saturday near Calabria (south) by patrol boats from the Italian Coast Guard and a unit of the Fiscal Brigade, who also found five dead on board.

These people died of thirst as drinking water was issued on cards by the traffickers who organized the trip, five of whom were arrested by order of the State Ministry of Messina (Sicily, south).

“During the trip, water and food resources were inhumanly rationed, to the extent that the migrants were forced to share a cup of coffee filled with water between 10 people,” the public ministry explained in a statement released Monday. the rescued were in a terrible condition, as they were also beaten with “sticks and belts.”

On the other hand, this morning there were five landings with 147 people on Lampedusa, an island in Sicily that served as a disembarkation port for many migrants.

With the entry of these people, the reception center on the island, which has a capacity of no more than 350 people, numbered more than 1,600 people, which led to the mobilization of the resources of the Italian Navy to transfer migrants to other places.

According to the latest data from the Italian Interior Ministry, more than 34,000 people arrived on the Italian coast this year, which is 36 percent more than in the same period last year, when the number of disembarked migrants amounted to 25,500 people.
