Bad Ischl will reorganize its city museum before 2024

As part of the preparations for the European Capital of Culture 2024, the Bad Ischl City Museum is getting a new exhibition concept. In the future, the focus will be on the history of the city, on the topics of identity and homeland, and on Bad Ischl’s European positioning.

“Thanks to the commitment of the long-standing curator Maria Sams and her team, our museum is already a wonderful place,” says Mayor Ines Schiller (SPÖ). “I am all the more pleased that the museum is now being made fit for the Capital of Culture year and the future afterwards.”

The planned redesign is based on a majority decision in the municipal council. According to the mayor, the concept and the curation of the city will “not cost a cent” because it is a Capital of Culture project.

Herta Neiß and Michael John are responsible for the revision of the museum. The latter is an economic, social and cultural historian. The business economist Herta Neiß is a distinguished cultural tourism expert. Both were curators of the successful state exhibition 2021.

The two museum organizers are planning a mix of objects, multimedia presentations, text installations, leitmotifs and interactive offerings. For John, an important goal is “to create an atmosphere to immerse yourself in historical situations”. In addition, the exhibition should surprise, entertain and also contain infotainment elements. “Tourism will also play a special role,” says Neiß. “The summer resorts that emerged in the 19th century changed the reality of life for guests and locals a lot. Both are our target groups.”
