Beach vacationers on 22 beach sections were not allowed into the sea from Thursday to Friday afternoon. The reason for the closure was the heavy rains earlier this week, which caused sewage to seep into the sea.
As a result, increased levels of E-coli bacteria and the pathogen Enterococcus were found in the water. The situation defused on Friday afternoon. The ban was imposed by the regional health authorities, who were carrying out random surveys of sea waters along the coast of the Emilia Romagna region. However, the ban was lifted on Friday afternoon after the bacterium’s parameters fell back below the limit values on all beaches where controls were carried out.
After the rains, it is more common to find elevated levels of E-coli bacteria as the sewage is discharged into the sea. This intestinal germ, which is widespread worldwide, can cause diarrhea and blood poisoning, among other things.
The municipality of Goro and beaches around Rimini were particularly affected by the ban. Only a few beach vacationers adhered to the bathing ban on Friday morning. Because of the high temperatures, most of them went into the water anyway.
