Will Smith posted emotional apology video

In an emotional YouTube post, Smith opened up about why he didn’t apologize to Rock when he accepted the best actor award for his work in ‘King Richard,’ shortly after he stormed the stage and slapped the comedian for saying he wasn’t had previously joked about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s cropped haircut.

“It’s all very convoluted,” says Smith. “I contacted Chris and the message that came back was that he’s not ready to talk yet and if he is he will get in touch.”

Smith reiterated his regret at his behavior, calling it “unacceptable.” The actor said he reacted so strongly because Rock’s joke related to the hair loss that Pinkett Smith is experiencing due to her alopecia. Pinkett Smith has addressed this issue publicly in the past.

“There’s no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave in that moment,” says Smith, who sighs deeply at several points in the video and appears to be fighting back tears. “There’s no part of me that thinks that’s the optimal way to deal with a feeling of disrespect or insult.”

Smith also addressed the question of whether Pinkett Smith, who rolled her eyes in front of the camera when Rock compared her buzzcut to Demi Moore’s in “GI Jane,” prompted him to storm the stage. The actor said his wife hadn’t said anything that would have goaded him into attacking Rock.

“I made my own decision based on my own experiences, based on my history with Chris,” says Smith. “Jada had nothing to do with it. I’m sorry babe. I want to apologize to my kids and family for the pressure I’ve put on all of us.”

There was speculation that Smith would open up about the aftermath of the slap in an interview with a high-profile journalist like Oprah Winfrey, but instead the actor has opted to take to social media to reach out directly to his fans. After the slap, Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the Academy Awards, and issued statements of remorse, but has otherwise kept a low profile.

Chris Rock recently broke his silence on July 24 during a standup show in New Jersey. “Anyone who says words hurt has never been slapped in the face,” Rock joked, according to US Weekly. He went on to say that he wasn’t a “victim” and joked, “Yeah, that hurt you asshole. But I shook the shit off and went to work the next day… I don’t go to the hospital for a paper cut .
