One lane for cyclists on the Nibelungen Bridge

How much space will cyclists have on the Nibelungen Bridge after the West Ring Bridge has been released in autumn 2024? There has been a lot of discussion about this in the past, and an answer is now a step closer.

As reported, several variants had been tried out in the past, ranging from widening the footpaths and cycle paths to opening up a lane in one or both directions of travel. As traffic officer Martin Hajart (VP) now says, the implementation of a two-way cycle path on both sides is emerging as the best solution. For this purpose, one lane is to be opened up for bicycle traffic in each direction of travel. In the event of implementation, cars will have two lanes instead of three.

The detailed planning is in progress, a challenge for the experts from city and country are the entrances and exits at the bridge heads. Another issue, according to the Deputy Mayor, is the connection to the planned cycle path along the Danube to St. Margarethen.

While Hajart sees a great opportunity for the entire city center in the West Ring Bridge (keyword Hauptplatz), criticism comes from the Greens. “Setting all plans for improvements in the area of soft mobility in relation to a Stone Age project for motorized private transport is the continuation of an outdated mobility policy,” says club chairman Helge Langer.
