Start of vacation in southern Germany: The main traffic jam weekend is rolling

As the ÖAMTC announced, there were severe disabilities, especially on the A10 in Salzburg. “Travellers needed around two hours for the approximately 40-kilometer route between Golling and Flachau around 9 a.m., in sections there was walking pace, then standstill again,” said Clemens Gstöttner from the traffic club.

In Upper Austria, traffic jams formed on the A8 in front of the construction site area near Ort im Innkreis and after an accident in front of Wels.

There were also traffic jams in Carinthia on the A10 in front of the Oswaldiberg tunnel near Villach and on the A11 in front of the Karawanken tunnel.

Because many vacationers are also on their way home, the ÖAMTC expects an increase in traffic on the transit routes to the north during the course of the day.

Main congestion weekend rolls on

A lot of patience is required on Austria’s roads this weekend. With the start of the summer holidays in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, the peak of the traffic jam season has come. Return travel will also increase, says Aloisia Gurtner, the expert from ÖAMTC Salzburg. “We want to keep transit travelers on the main routes.”

The Tauern Autobahn is particularly prone to congestion this year due to several construction sites, which is why advance information in Bavaria is an important factor. Informed travelers would prepare for this in advance and not lose patience so quickly.

“This weekend we will drive through the construction site areas on the A10,” says Herbert Thaler, who is traveling with the ÖAMTC traffic jam motorbike. In this way, help can be provided quickly if there are small breakdowns at bottlenecks that often lead to traffic jams. An ADAC flight observer will fly over the most important motorway connections in western Austria and Bavaria. His observations are incorporated into traffic jam forecasts.

Drivers on their way to Croatia will have to wait longer. Waiting times are to be expected when entering the border from Slovenia to Croatia and at the Gruskovje/Macelj crossing.

After all: On Tuesday, the new bridge that connects the Croatian mainland with the Peljesac Peninsula was opened to traffic. For everyone who wants to go to Dubrovnik, there are no border controls, as the journey through Bosnia-Herzegovina is no longer necessary. This results in a time saving of two hours.

In addition to holiday travellers, the Hungarian Grand Prix, which takes place this weekend, will also bring increased traffic. Drivers have to be patient, especially on Sunday evenings on the return journey: there can be traffic jams at the Nickelsdorf border crossing and in the Fischamend and Bruck an der Leitha construction sites. The ÖAMTC recommends purchasing the electronic toll vignette online in advance in order to avoid waiting times at the border.

Due to a construction site, there may also be delays on the A7 in the Suben area.
