The International Committee of Auschwitz acknowledged on Tuesday that it was “horrified” by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s claims that there was a “pure Hungarian race” and asked the European Union to “distance itself from these racist connotations.”
The nationalist leader’s speech, which the organization’s vice president Christoph Heubner called “stupid and dangerous,” reminds Holocaust survivors of “the dark times of their own alienation and persecution.”
In a statement sent to French news agency AFP, Heubner asked Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who will receive Orban on an official visit on Thursday, to disassociate himself from the Hungarian prime minister’s position on behalf of the European Union.
