Syrian-born author Jad Turjman died in an accident

The writer Jad Turjman, who came from Syria and has been living in Austria since 2015, is dead. This was reported by several local media on Sunday. Accordingly, it is the 32-year-old mountaineer who had a fatal accident on Friday evening when descending from the Hohen Göll in the Berchtesgarden Alps in Bavaria, as the Residenz Verlag announced. Turjman was born in Damascus in 1989, studied English and worked in the Damascus city government. When he was drafted into the Syrian army during the civil war in 2014, he decided to flee and finally came to Austria. He has lived in Salzburg since 2015.

His two books “When Jasmine Emigrates. The Story of My Escape” (2019) and “The Smell of the Soul” (2021) were published by Residenz Verlag. The publishing house has announced the next book for this fall, entitled “When jasmine puts down roots – How I learned to find my homeland”. Turjman, who lives in Mattsee (Flachgau), also performed as a stand-up comedian. Until 2021 he worked for the “Heroes” project and looked after young people. Last year he received Austrian citizenship.

According to ORF Salzburg, Claudia Romeder, head of Residenz-Verlag, was stunned. “Jad Turjman has overcome so many obstacles in life and he really impressed me with his way of overcoming problems. His humor and warmth towards people were engaging. Jad’s way of writing and raising issues was unique. His death is a great loss.” , said Romeder in a statement.
