The alert was received around 5 p.m. by the Geboltskirchen volunteer fire brigade. “We were told that two friends wanted to swim to a platform in the lake. When one got there and turned around, he could no longer see the other,” says operations manager Martin Pillweiß.
Bathers helped
The fire brigade went to the site, some bathers had already started to look out for the missing person. After their arrival, the emergency services took over the further search. “Some took off their gear and jumped into the water themselves to search the pond. We then drove down the pond in a boat and tried to search the bottom with sticks,” says Pillweiß. The divers finally arrived around 5:45 p.m. and continued the search under water. In order not to raise any more dust and not to cloud the view under water, the search with sticks was stopped.
After half an hour, at around 6:15 p.m., it finally became a sad certainty: the divers could only get the dead person out of the water. He may have drowned, the cause is still unknown.
