Watch out for love-mad deer on the road

“During the roe deer rut, the animals’ natural instincts are literally switched off. The deer don’t stop at busy roads.”

Long distances when mating

The rutting does attract the attention of the roebuck during the mating season. Usually the buck runs behind for a long time until it comes to copulation. With the long distances, country roads are often crossed. Especially on warm and humid days, deer are currently crossing the road – at any time of the day or night.

Caution is therefore required, especially when driving through wooded areas, along hedges or between tall corn fields: “A deer weighs between 20 and 25 kilograms. In a collision at 100 km/h, forces of around half a ton act,” says Steinkellner.
