The Directorate for State Security and Intelligence (DSN) had been monitoring an 18-year-old suspected follower of radical political Islam for a long time. So far, the Austrian with Turkish roots has mainly attracted attention in relevant forums with corresponding statements. On Friday, more concrete threats against the police could be seen. The suspect is said to have threatened to take action against the police.
When the 18-year-old and his mother were surrounded by police officers in the car in Sellrain (Tyrol), the woman is said to have tried to run over Cobra officers, as the Ministry of the Interior confirmed on Saturday. While her son was sitting in the passenger seat, the woman stepped on the accelerator. One of the armed Cobra police officers was knocked down and seriously injured, another officer had to be treated on site.
The woman and her son were both arrested, and further investigations are ongoing in Austria and abroad, the Ministry of the Interior said.
International cooperation
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (VP) emphasized the international cooperation in the case of the young terrorist suspect: “The Austrian state security authorities are closely monitoring developments in the Islamist scene and are conducting structural investigations in close cooperation with European authorities.”
After the 18-year-old had been remanded in custody, the young man partially confessed. His mother was at large charged with assault and resisting the authorities.
