The flare is and remains an important part of the safety system of the OMV refinery in Burghausen: residual products or excess gas quantities are burned with it in a controlled manner. “The burning tower” can often be seen far into the Innviertel. The company announces that in early and mid-August there will be intense flare operation again, including noise and the influence of light. Because the systems will be restarted after the “Turnaround 2022” – a general inspection. The gradual ramp-up will not be completed until the end of August. “We ask for the citizens’ understanding for any inconvenience that may arise,” the company said in a press release.
The “turnaround” is an important project for the refinery. The production facilities are checked at regular intervals. The last inspection was in 2014. 2018 was cleaned and inspected after a partial shutdown. This year, the flow of crude oil through the pipelines was stopped, the plants were shut down, and the hydrocarbons were purged with steam and nitrogen. The system parts are dismantled, inspected, renewed and cleaned if necessary. Not only maintenance and inspection are on the program, but also an expansion of some parts of the plant in order to increase capacity. According to its own statements, OMV budgeted 50 million euros for this “turnaround”. Planning for this project, which began in June and is scheduled to last until the end of August, took more than three years. The companies OMV and Borealis informed the residents in advance, and citizens from Hochburg-Ach and Überackern (Braunau district) were also invited.
