It already begins in elementary school: the promotion of talent by the state of Upper Austria. 3,500 gifted children are currently looked after by the program that is unique in Austria.
“With the extensive range of courses during the school year and in the summer holidays, children and young people are supported on the basis of their talents,” says Deputy Governor and Education Officer Christine Haberlander (VP).
But before the students and their talents can be promoted, the youngest must first go through the “psychological talent assessment”. This is the name of the method used by “Talent Oberösterreich” to search for highly talented children and young people in the six educational regions of the state from the third grade onwards. Once these are found, they should not only be cared for by their teachers and specially trained educators, but also by their parents. “For the optimal development of talents” everyone has to pull together, says the education officer.
school during the holidays
In addition to the regular course program of “Talents Upper Austria”, the state’s summer academy is taking place again this year.
Almost 400 students go to school during the summer holidays. And that voluntarily. They take part in workshops and excursions in small groups – this year around 54 students are leaving for Great Britain to learn with native speakers – and deepen what they have learned at school. From music and science to chess.
Teachers and parents who have questions about giftedness can refer to talente-ooe.at information and make an appointment for a consultation.
