Improved quality of Carinthia’s lakes

Two to four times a year, the Carinthian Institute for Lake Research takes water samples from 40 Carinthian lakes to check the water quality. Crucial for this are the nutrient content, depth of visibility and proportion of algae, says Roswitha Fresner from the Institute for Lake Research.

The water quality is the better, the less nutrient-poor the body of water is – because less algae are associated with it. The results of the recently published 36th Carinthian Lake Report show an improvement in water quality in 16 of 40 lakes. The samples were taken in 2021. While in 2020 the highest possible water quality was measured in only six lakes, in 2021 it was already 13 lakes. Overall, 28 out of 40 lakes, i.e. 70 percent, were of excellent quality. The Klopeiner See, Millstätter See and Faaker See received the best rating.

The reason for the increase in quality compared to 2020 is the lower rainfall in the previous year. Rain leads to flooding in the water bodies, which can increase the nutrient input and thus the algae infestation.
