Accident crossings at the Wels-Nord exit are to be defused

After a collision in the intersection of the exit from the A25 Welser Autobahn with the B137 Innviertler Straße on Thursday, a 25-year-old driver from the Wels-Land district is still in the intensive care unit of the Wels Clinic. Her condition is stable, the hospital said yesterday. The young woman crashed into the car of a 26-year-old who was traveling north on the B137.

Residents of the Puchberg district, who regularly witness accidents there, are now demanding measures to prevent serious injuries or even fatalities in the future. “Something happens all the time there, only a few weeks ago there was a serious collision between two drivers, over the years there have been serious collisions again and again,” says a Puchberger, who drives there almost every day, in an interview with the Upper Austria News. It was a major omission during construction in the 1970s that another ramp was not built. Because the biggest problem there is that car and truck drivers who want to exit the A25 (towards Passau) and head towards Wels have to cross four lanes.

Andreas Weidinger, traffic officer for the Wels city police, suggests that the section of road should be examined more closely with experts from the state during a local inspection. In May, there was a similar accident with injuries as a few days ago. Weidinger suggests reducing the speed further as a first measure and lowering the speed limit from 60 to 50 km/h.

When asked in the office of Transport Councilor Günther Steinkellner (FP) yesterday, it was learned that the problem was known and that it was currently being evaluated how road safety could be improved there. From 2016 to 2021, there were 30 accidents involving personal injury on this stretch of road. The accident blackspot can only be eliminated in cooperation with the three road maintenance companies involved, Asfinag, the state of Upper Austria and the city of Wels. According to a spokesman for Landesrat Steinkellner, a wide variety of structural measures and variants will be looked at, for example whether the two motorway exits will be controlled by traffic lights and whether a ramp can be implemented. You also have to take into account the effects on the heavily frequented traffic light crossing with Oberfeldstrasse. There is no schedule yet.
