Awe spreads. After all, the eighth version of an icon is parked there: the new SL. The abbreviation stands for “Super-Light” and dates back to around 1952. The model series has always stood for sportiness, driving pleasure and top technology. Like the bright red test car with the SL license plate. SL for Salzburg-Land, just for clarification.
V8 with 585 hp
For the first time not developed by Mercedes itself, but by the colleagues from Affalterbach, it is clear at the latest after pressing the start button: The car has legend potential.
Especially since the AMG 63 is the top version of the series. 4.0-liter V8 biturbo, 585 hp, 800 Nm: The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is completed in 3.6 seconds, and the acceleration ends at 315 km/h. Pure joy at the regulars’ table, horror among environmentalists. Although, slowly: the 2+2 seater is hardly an everyday car, the 63er starts at 252,695 euros. An investment property. And the model is sold out anyway, this year and next year. “Please inquire again in 2024”, is the answer after the delivery time. In other words, only a handful of copies will be delivered to Austria.
Edges aerodynamically pull backwards from the shark-mouth radiator grille. The side air vents only open at higher speeds. Airpanel is what AMG calls the system that balances aerodynamics and cooling. At the rear, the rear spoiler extends from 80 km/h in order to optimize either driving stability or air resistance.
The now lighter soft top opens and closes up to 60 km/h in 15 seconds. The “Hey Mercedes” voice control works in fresh air mode even at higher speeds, the air turbulence is marginal. But the acceleration is intense – after a short breather.
Because the V8 needs time to switch from cruising to sprint mode. For this, the 9-speed automatic in Sport + mode cuts through the gears so that the driver can become anxious about the gearbox. And that had to be too: Foot off the gas, and the V8 artificially misfires. Like back then, when carburetor models actually disposed of excess fuel in this way.
If you like it a little cheaper, you can fiddle around with the AMG SL 55. The 476 hp are already available at a bargain price of 211,376 euros.
