European countries believe that Russia search a pretext to delay the return of this turbine and further reduce its gas deliveries, in the context of tensions around Ukraine.
Germany reaction
The head of the German government, Olaf Scholz, today accused Russia of being responsible for blocking the delivery of the turbine.
“There is no reason why the delivery should not take place,” he said, at a time when the Kremlin cut the volume of its supplies citing the need for this turbine.
Moscow only has to “provide the information customs needed for transportation to Russia,” Scholz said during a visit to the Siemens factory in Muhlheim an der Ruhr (western Germany), where the turbine is located.
Gazprom claims that the equipment, which was shipped back to Germany after being repaired in Canada, is essential to ensure the proper functioning of the Nord Stream gas pipeline.
Reduction in gas supply
Russia cut deliveries in June and July, saying the pipeline could not function normally without the turbine.
Nord Stream, which according to Gazprom has a capacity of 167 million m3 per day, links Russia with Germany via the Sea Baltic.
It is strategic for the supply of gas to all of Europe, especially to the Germans, who are highly dependent on Russian energy resources.
