“The goal should remain that government participation is sought,” said Federal SPÖ leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner yesterday at a joint press conference with Tyrol’s SPÖ leader Georg Dornauer in Innsbruck, setting the direction for the Tyrolean state elections on September 25th.
A coalition of the ÖVP and the Greens currently governs in Tyrol – unlike in Upper Austria, there is no longer proportional representation. The Tyrolean SPÖ achieved around 17.3 percent in the 2018 state election and became the second strongest force in the state parliament.
In any case, the Tyrolean election is also of great national political importance, according to Rendi-Wagner. Dornauer recently ruled out possible three- or four-party coalitions after the election for the SPÖ, for him only a two-party coalition was an option. According to the current status of the polls, such a move is only possible with the ÖVP. Asked whether she would agree with this statement, Rendi-Wagner said: “That is a matter for the Tyrolean party friends. I will not tell them how they will go into government after election day.” Her confidence in the Tyrolean SP boss, with whom she had clashed several times in the past, was great: “Georg Dornauer can do it.” Dornauer was ready to govern, but “not at any price”. He saw black and green “at the end” at state and federal level.
