The fire broke out early Thursday morning after an unintentional explosion at the blast site there and set the adjacent forest on fire. The drought in Grunewald and the ammunition material still stored on the site are a major challenge, said the spokesman.
Currently, the emergency services have withdrawn to 1,000 meters. There are 100 firefighters and police officers on site. Additional forces and special forces of the Bundeswehr are requested.
The railway announced on its website that both regional and long-distance traffic were interrupted. The Avus motorway, Kronprinzessinnenweg and Havelchaussee are closed in this area. Residents should keep windows and doors closed – ventilation and air conditioning should be switched off.
“We are currently in the consultation and observation phase,” said the fire department spokesman. According to a police spokesman, it is still completely unclear how the explosion could have happened. Found ammunition is stored on the square and defused in a controlled manner by the explosive ordnance disposal service of the Berlin police.
