Few Austrian athletes have polarized people as much as Daniel Koellerer in the recent past. Born in Wels, he rose to 55th place in the world rankings in October 2009 before falling quite low.
During his playing days, the now 38-year-old earned the nickname “Crazy Dani” with rants and smashed bats. He hit rock bottom when he was banned for life by the International Tennis Integrity Office in 2011 after a two-year investigation. Köllerer was accused of manipulating three matches.
Today (Thursday), Köllerer, who has since calmed down, looks back on this eventful time on TV in the Pro7 show “Das Große Promi-Büßen” (8:15 p.m.). “I was the biggest asshole in the world,” the former exceptional talent does not spare with self-criticism. “I am deeply ashamed of that today.”
The family gave him support during the difficult times. “My daughter was my absolute lifesaver. The little one was born two weeks after I was banned,” Köllerer gives deep insights.
