Pope Francis appoints personal medical assistant to man who saved his life

In a statement, the Vatican identified the assistant as Massimiliano Strappetticoordinator of the nursing and health facilities of the Vatican, a sovereign state surrounded by Rome.

The position of “personal medical assistant” did not previously exist in this papacy, although John Paul IIwho died in 2005, had several medical caregivers in the last years of his life.

Francisco already has a personal physician, a specialist in geriatrics from the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where the Argentine priest underwent surgery on his intestine a year ago. That was the first time the Pope had been hospitalized since his election in 2013.

Last year, Francisco joked in an interview that it was Strappetti who “saved my life” by convincing him that he could no longer postpone the operation.

Pope Francis had been suffering from a serious narrowing of the colon caused by the diverticulitisor the formation of small bulging sacs in the intestinal wall.

In recent months, the pope has had to use a wheelchair, cane or walker due to knee pain caused by a small fracture and an inflamed ligament.
