A climbing tour ended for father and son on Thursday with a helicopter flight: The 56-year-old German and his twelve-year-old son had planned the Drachenwand via ferrata, rated C difficulty, on the Mondsee elevation of the same name. At around 9:30 a.m., vacationers boarded the tour, which normally takes two to three hours.
At around 12:30 p.m., they were a good two-thirds of the way down when the son suddenly complained of dizziness and exhaustion above the rope bridge at about 1,020 meters above sea level. Despite an extensive rest, the boy’s condition did not improve, which is why the father alerted the emergency services.
A man from the Mondseeland mountain rescue team blocked the via ferrata and two other mountain rescuers climbed the via ferrata. Meanwhile, the dragonfly carried out a reconnaissance flight, during which the two climbers could be located above the rope bridge. The exhausted 12-year-old and his father were rescued by the police helicopter with a rope and brought safely to the valley, the police said on Thursday evening.
