New system localizes tumor during surgery

In Austria, every eighth woman receives this diagnosis in the course of her life. In addition to tumours, screenings and early detection examinations also detect other lesions such as calcium deposits that have to be removed. So that these non-palpable changes can also be found during the operation, they must be “marked” beforehand. So far, this has been done with fine wires just before the operation. “We have now used a so-called ‘Scout System’ for this purpose in the Kepler University Hospital – for the first time in Austria – which shortens the duration of the operation and reduces the burden on the patients,” says Peter Schrenk, Head of the Breast Competence Center. The new system uses a previously implanted mini antenna, with which the tumor can be localized from the outside.
