Italy’s mayor: “Our jellyfish are harmless”

Because of the high water temperatures, there are some lung jellyfish, which can be recognized by their purple stripes and can reach a considerable size, but these are harmless and would not cause burns.

This is what a lung jellyfish looks like

“Due to the warming of the seas, lung jellyfish are more and more common in our country. In the upper Adriatic, they are now considered an indicator of the water condition, because jellyfish only live in clean water. Local communities and health institutions have always monitored the health of the Adriatic: For more than 20 years, all places have been awarded the Blue Flag – an international seal of quality for clean water,” said a press release from ten mayors of the Venetian Adriatic coast from Porto Tolle to Bibione.

“In other seas, jellyfish can be a cause for concern: the tentacles can cause burns that, while easily treatable with special ointments or vinegar, still leave a feeling of unease. But the Veneto coast has been largely spared this sea migration, and so it is bathing – from the Po estuary to the Gulf of Trieste – continues to be a great pleasure”, emphasized the mayors.

“No more unnecessary scaremongering. The jellyfish in our seas are harmless: biologists confirm this,” said Federico Caner, tourism officer for the Veneto region. The waters along the 150 kilometers of Veneto coast are constantly monitored. “The fully booked weekends on our beaches are proof that European guests are not hesitatingly visiting the seaside resorts on the coast, despite the irritating news,” said the mayor’s press release.
