Women’s shelters: Threatened women are “completely abandoned” by authorities

In a broadcast, the Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelter Association criticized the fact that many women in Austria “are completely abandoned, not taken seriously, rejected, misinformed or even yelled at” by the authorities when they want to file a police report. “Too many reports are placed by the public prosecutor’s office, far too few dangerous perpetrators are taken into custody, the proceedings take a long time,” it says. Authorities are actually obliged to stop violence, instead the martyrdom of those affected would be prolonged “through permanent, unbearable victim blaming and victim-perpetrator reversal that takes place every day”.

Mückstein reported hatred and threats

Former Minister of Health Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) complained in an interview with the news magazine “Profil” (online edition) on Friday that society still lacks awareness “that anonymous threats can trigger just as great fears as direct insults or threats the street. We can no longer trivialize this as pure venting at the virtual regulars’ table”. This awareness is also only beginning to develop at state level.

Mückstein, who had already reported daily threats against himself and his family when he resigned in March, described massive security measures during his tenure: “I was under police protection for four months. During the day by two police officers, at night one stood in front of my door. Even in front of my daughters’ house,” a bulletproof vest was always carried. Corona measures opponents have made threats against him and his daughters. “Ultimately, you can’t assess how big this threat really is, even if – like I did at the time – you could trust the experts from state security. This residual uncertainty as to whether something would happen to your own family was too high a price for me.”

In the meantime, the threats have subsided, but letters like “We haven’t forgotten you!” would still flutter into the house. Nevertheless – from autumn he wants to work as a general practitioner again. When asked what the results of investigations into alleged threats were, he said: “In around twelve cases, state security asked me whether I would agree to prosecution. I generally agreed.” In two cases he was informed that the proceedings had been discontinued, “I haven’t heard anything from the other cases”.
