LASK plays in Wolfsberg with black ribbon

LASK plays in Wolfsberg with black ribbon

The news of Helmut Oberndorfer’s death shook LASK. And yet the ball has to roll in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Players will do their best to honor the Vice President’s memory with a good performance.

Football is currently only a sideshow at LASK – and Wolfsberg will also not be fully involved for much more mundane reasons. On Tuesday, the Carinthians still have to fight against Gzira United, who finished fifth in Malta last season, for a place in the play-off of the Europa Conference League. The 0-0 home game in Klagenfurt was an embarrassment.

On Tuesday in the Centenary Stadium in Attard, it’s not just about promotion to the play-offs, but also about the European Cup millions on unfamiliar artificial turf that would flow if they reached the group stage.

“The WAC brings a lot of quality”

“WAC brings a lot of quality with them, they have proven that over the past few years with great consistency,” said coach Dietmar Kühbauer. He attaches little importance to the start-up difficulties of the Carinthians, especially since, like LASK, they are unbeaten in competitive games. But Wolfsberg was not able to convince – with the low point against Gzira. “We didn’t get the pace high enough,” explained coach Robin Dutt.

The former pacemaker said goodbye in the summer: Michael Liendl switched to GAK. Without the leading figure, Dutt is still looking for the right way. The German wants to spread the responsibility in the new 5-3-2 over several shoulders.

Piesinger opposes LASK

Access Konstantin Kerschbaumer was one of the few bright spots so far, another has LASK past: The defense chief is Simon Piesinger, son of the black and white legend Gerald Piesinger.

Educated at the Linz Academy, he only played in the second team of LASK. The path to Randers led via Blau-Weiß Linz, Innsbruck, Sturm Graz and Altach. In the previous season, Piesinger was on the ball with the Danes in the group stage of the Europa Confe0rence League.

“We are on a good way”

So that he can also play there with Wolfsberg, an increase in performance is needed. From the WAC point of view, the game against LASK is therefore a dress rehearsal – for LASK it is the next chance to take a step forward. Kühbauer: “Our start to the season was solid, we are on the right track. We want to build on that in Wolfsberg.” That would also be in the spirit of Oberndorfer.
