Nicolás Maduro criticized Argentina and the US for the seized plane

“Is there no sovereign domain? Is there no respect for sovereignty? Is there no respect for international law or is it that the United States courts rule in Argentina?” he asked. in a speech broadcast by the state television station VTV.

The cargo plane emtrasur, subsidiary of the Venezuelan state airline conviasa, sanctioned by Washington, was detained last June after landing at the Ezeiza airport, coming from Mexico, with a crew of 14 Venezuelans and five Iranians and a load of auto parts.

Seizure

Last August 2 The United States asked Argentina to seize the plane after in July a District of Columbia court issued an order considering that US “export laws” were violated when Emtrasur acquired the aircraft in an operation with Mahan Air, an airline affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, considered by the White House as a terrorist organization.

Maduro, who has already protested the retention of the plane, insisted that the aircraft is a “Venezuelan asset” and that it has “property papers.”

“It is a plane that went around the world providing service. How much this Emtrasur plane has been needed in the crisis that Cuba is experiencing now with the explosion of the tankers in the yard (…) how long did it take us to help Cuba, we lost 18 hours for help to put out the fires,” he added.

The president indicated that he will not “accept” that the United States dictate measures against Venezuelan goods and ordered that a team of “experts” go to Argentina to fight the “battle for Venezuela.”

Crew

Almost two months after the arrival of the plane from Emtrasur to Ezeiza, Judge Federico Villena decided this Monday to keep in force the prohibition to leave the country of seven of the 19 crew members, including four Iranians and three Venezuelans. The remaining 12 will be able to return to their countries.

The decision of the magistrate is limited to the four Iranians, including the pilot Gholamreza Ghasemi along with Abdolbaset Mohammadi, Mohammad Khosraviaragh and Saeid Vali Zadeh, and the three Venezuelans: Víctor Pérez Gómez (Operations General Manager), Mario Arraga Urdaneta, and mechanic José Garcia Contreras.

The purpose of this decision is not to define the degree of participation in the facts investigated, since the investigation has not yet been completed. On the contrary, it has only been evaluated -as it was advanced- if it is reasonable to maintain the measure of prohibition of leaving the country ordered, “said the judge in the resolution.
