Rottweiler bit girl: dog owner convicted in Graz

The dog owner saw no fault in himself and stated that the animal had escaped from a kennel. Since there had already been several incidents with the dog, which often roamed free, the accused was conditionally sentenced to a fine of 3,600 euros and four months.

The then 10-year-old was walking with her mother when the dog attacked her and bit her arm, chest and both thighs. According to the medical expert, the injuries are serious, but without permanent consequences. The pet owner was not aware of any guilt: “I fenced in the kennel, the fence is 1.60 meters high and the dog has never escaped before. What should I have done?”

However, judge Hanspeter Draxler had “not even the slightest doubt” that the accused was to blame. “The dog has been terrorizing the whole area for a long time,” he said. “This goes far beyond negligence,” emphasized the chairman. There were various incidents of injuries before July 2021, the dog is said to have attacked children several times.

The Rottweiler was taken to the animal shelter, but has now been placed privately again. “He’s super friendly, he’s my little teddy bear,” said his new owner. “The aggressiveness of the animal was known,” said the judge, on the other hand, and pronounced the accused guilty. This took three days to think about it, the prosecutor made no statement. The judgment is not final.
