After the drinking water was blocked for more than a month, the people of Aschach are already familiar with the limit values if the cool water is contaminated with ether (ETBE). From a contamination of less than five micrograms of the chemical per liter of water, the cool water is considered harmless for consumption.
Of course, this minimum value was only recently measured in the Aschacher tap water, exactly a week ago. A previous measurement had shown a level of 19 micrograms after residents of the community complained that their drinking water tasted bitter.
“If the value is confirmed to be below 5 micrograms, we can release the water again for consumption,” says Gerald Steidl from the drinking water supervisory authority of the state of Upper Austria. The sample was taken yesterday, and the data from the control sampling should be evaluated on Thursday, which will be the day of the draw, whether the people of Aschacher can continue to use their water only for washing or finally for quenching their thirst and cooking.
Mayor Hubert Kern (VP) hopes that the articulated lorry, as a supplier of free mineral water, unloaded its freight at the building yard for the last time on Monday. Supplying the population with free drinking water has already cost the municipality more than 30,000 euros. There is still no trace of who caused the water pollution.
