The first ship with corn that left the Ukrainian port of Odessa on the Black Sea and bound for Lebanon has docked in the Turkish port of Mersin and is waiting for a buyer for the goods, a diplomatic source in Ukraine confirmed.
Ukrainian Ambassador to Lebanon Igor Ostash confirmed the ship’s arrival in Turkey at a briefing at the Media Center in Kyiv, local news agency Ukrinform reported on Wednesday.
“The Razoni ship, which was the first to leave the port of Odessa and heading for the port of Tripoli, Lebanon, has docked in the port of Mersin, Turkey, which means that all the problems around this cargo ship have disappeared,” he said.
The ship, which halted its docking in Lebanon after failing to sell cargo to a Lebanese merchant, is currently on Turkey’s south coast awaiting “instructions for a new destination,” according to a diplomatic source cited by Spanish news agency EFE.
According to the diplomatic mission, the grain aboard the Razoni will be resold after the ship sets off, which is a “common” commercial practice.
The ship sailed from Odessa on August 1, and the Lebanese buyer, who was supposed to buy 26,000 tons of corn from her, refused delivery due to a delay in delivery, originally scheduled for more than five months.
According to the Ukrainian embassy, the Razoni were going to leave Odessa on February 24, the day the Russian invasion of the country began, so the flight had to be suspended, and the cargo was “disinfected and sealed” to ensure security. the safety of the goods.
After intense negotiations, Moscow and Kyiv agreed on July 22 on a safe corridor from Odessa to allow the shipment of 20 million tons of grain blocked in their granaries due to the war from this port.
Since Ukraine is one of the largest grain exporters in the world, the conflict has triggered a food crisis that has mainly affected countries in the Middle East and Africa that are heavily dependent on Russian and Ukrainian grain.
