Boric’s government promotes dialogue with the Mapuches

“It seems to us that it is the only way that allows peaceful coexistence in a sustainable manner over time,” the official told Radio Cooperativa.

“The security edge is not the one that is going to find the solution to the conflict in the South Macrozone. The president has said it: conflicts of this magnitude, of this historical character, require political agreements and the Minister of the Interior (Izkia Siches) announced a dialogue process accompanied by the United Nations”, he added.

Criticism from left and right

In addition, he came out in defense of the position of the government of Gabriel Boric due to the criticism he received from both the ruling party and the opposition.

“I was in Los Ríos sitting with several political authorities and parliamentarians, and the majority opinion was that better security conditions had to be had without a state of exception,” Monsalve said.

The official reported that in the last semester of 2021 there were 30 acts of rural violence in Los Ríos, while so far in 2022 there were 36.

The conflict in this area of Chile has been going on for decades and is due to a territorial dispute between the State, some Mapuche communities and forestry companies that exploit lands considered ancestral by the native peoples.

Currently, the Armed Forces collaborate with the police in the Araucania region and two provinces of the biobio since last May 17, when President Gabriel Boric decreed a state of emergency constitutional exception in the area, ratified every 15 days by Congress at the request of the Executive.
