Mine accident in Mexico: Relatives call for international help

“The authorities say we should wait, wait, you have to get them out,” said the brother of one of the miners at a press conference attended by the relatives. “We want help, even if it’s foreign,” he demanded.

Mexico City. According to the Mexican newspaper “El Universal”, the coordinator of the national civil protection, Laura Velázquez, admitted difficulties in rescuing the miners. In the mine in Sabinas in the state of Coahuila, more than 1,000 kilometers north of Mexico City, there was a landslide and water ingress on August 3, making the search difficult. Five miners were able to get to safety on their own. Three of them were treated in hospital for injuries. The condition of the remaining ten pals is unknown.

Mining accidents are common in the Coahuila mining region. In 2006, an explosion at the Pasta de Conchos coal mine in Coahuila killed 65 miners. A year ago, seven miners drowned inside a mine after a heavy rain.
