Skim off excess profits? IV calls for “no more midsummer night’s dreams”

“But the fact that the governing parties in particular are now increasingly giving in to populist midsummer night’s dreams must be firmly rejected. Such quick fixes may create a mood in the short term, but such discussions are poisonous for the economic foundation of our country,” said Christian C. Pochtler, President of IV Vienna.

He warns against “leaving the ground of the market economy and, above all, of tax legal and capital market security”. There are a number of arguments against such a tax on “alleged excess profits” made by energy companies. Such skimming proposals are “populist actionism, pure occasional legislation disregarding all market economy regulations”.

“Where does it end then?”

“Where does that end then? Do we in the industry also get tax credits in the event of losses?” Pochtler asks in a broadcast today. In addition, one should stick to the overall picture – “after all, more than a third of the energy costs consist of taxes and duties – here the public sector snacks anyway and thus benefits from the higher prices,” says Pochtler. The money must remain in the companies so that they can invest in the future.

The day before yesterday, Vice-Chancellor and Green Party leader Werner Kogler spoke out in favor of taxing the “excess profits” of corporations on the energy market. A corresponding model is now to be developed.
