He wants to sail around the world non-stop, without outside help and “single-handed”, i.e. alone on board. Sedlacek cast off from Les Sables d’Olonne on the Atlantic on Monday, as seen in live video on the project’s Facebook page. In the past few years, he had had to interrupt or cancel the venture several times, partly because of the Covid pandemic.
32,000 nautical miles through five oceans
The first section takes the sailor with his yacht into the northern Atlantic, west of Great Britain and Ireland, explained one of Sedlacek’s companions at the start of the journey in a support boat, before it turned off and left the extreme athlete to his own devices. The challenge is expected to last around 200 days and take the record-breaking route at least 32,000 nautical miles through all five oceans, including the Arctic and Southern Oceans. Sedlacek transports a total of 1.2 tons of equipment on his yacht.
Fully recyclable yacht
The aim of the record attempt is also to promote sustainable sailing, because the boat is fully electric and, in addition to the wind in the sails, is powered exclusively by renewable energies such as wind, hydroelectric power and solar energy. The yacht was built by Sedlacek’s self-founded shipyard using fully sustainable and recyclable materials such as volcanic fibre, balsa wood and biocompatible epoxy resin. In the record-breaking project, boat building solutions – such as recyclable composite materials, harmless matrix systems and natural core materials – were to be tested “to the limit”, the company owner and skipper emphasizes on his website.
