The aid organization International Rescue Committee (IRC) reported this on Monday and warned: The current crisis could put more people in Afghanistan cost life than the last 20 years of war. “43 percent of the Afghan population lives on less than one meal a day,” according to the IRC. According to the IRC, households headed by women are particularly affected.
Taliban fighters celebrated the return to power of their radical Islamist militia a year ago near the closed US embassy in Kabul on Monday. Many brought the white banners of the Taliban government to their rally on the adjacent Massud Square and repeatedly chanted victory slogans.
Official celebrations for the anniversary were not planned, but state television wanted to celebrate it with a special program. Taliban flags also waved from all the lampposts along the road to the airport. Government spokesman Bilal Karimi spoke on Twitter of a “day of victory and happiness for Afghan Muslims and the people”.
After the US and its allies began withdrawing troops last year, the Islamists quickly had numerous territories of Afghanistan conquered. On August 15, 2021, they stormed the presidential palace in the capital, taking control of the entire country. To date, however, her government has not been recognized by any country.
According to experts, one of the main reasons for the rapid collapse of the Afghan government and the takeover of power by the Islamists is war crimes against the civilian population as well as corruption in the Afghan army and the political elite, which is supported by the West.
The price is for the people in Afghanistan high, as IRC points out: “Aid funding cuts combined with asset freezes and the collapse of the banking sector have led to an economic meltdown.” The Afghan economy also suffered heavy losses because the Taliban closed many professions to Afghan women.
According to the IRC, civil engagement is also suffering severely. 77 percent of women-led civil society organizations have lost their funding in the past 12 months and have had to cease their activities as a result. In particular, women-led civil society organizations should be given access to funding, the IRC demands.
