In the spring of 2009, Hans Krankl spent 70 days full of emotions in Linz. At least that’s how the LASK fans saw it, saying goodbye to their firefighter on the bench after a 1: 3 in Mattersburg with forgiving words: “Maybe we’ll see each other again in better times”.
For the black-and-white appendix, this was the case last Sunday when they met the former coach, who is currently working as a television expert: after ten games without a win against Rapid, there was a convincing 2-1 draw in Pasching. But Hans Krankl himself has certainly seen better times.
As reported, Austria’s football icon was temporarily arrested by the police. He is said to have hit an official with his car after the game, which the former ÖFB team boss vehemently denies. According to the police, the 69-year-old from Vienna only stopped his vehicle when there had already been slight physical contact between the officer and the bumper of the car. “Then he rolled the vehicle towards two other police officers and only stopped there after renewed contact,” the police report said.
When Krankl was then escorted back to the VIP area by six police officers, eyewitnesses initially assumed it was a security measure: “I first thought of police protection because of the high-risk game, until I read what it was really about,” says one of them. As the police confirmed to OÖN on Tuesday, Krankl is being investigated on suspicion of attempted resistance to state authority.
Accordingly, he should be questioned again about the events. The testimony of Krankl’s cousin, who was in the car with him, is still pending. However, Hans Krankl will be returning to Upper Austria this week anyway: next Saturday, August 20, he will perform as “Hansi K.” with the cover band “Monti Beton” at Burg Clam. Krankl sings there in the opening act for “Seiler und Speer”.
