A 41-year-old from the Eferding district recognized the seriousness of the situation just in time on Tuesday morning: The man was driving with his seven-year-old daughter in the car on the A1 towards Vienna when he heard strange noises and therefore left the Westautobahn. Shortly after leaving Asten, I noticed the engine stuttering. He drove a few more meters along the L566 in the direction of the Asten roundabout before smoke suddenly rose from the engine compartment.
He immediately parked his BMW on the side of the road, got out of the car with his daughter and fled to safety a few meters away – not a minute too late. Just a few moments later, the car was almost fully engulfed in flames. Video footage shows the flames blazing from the engine compartment:
The Asten and Raffelstetten fire brigades arrived and were able to quickly bring the fire under control. Nobody got hurt. The cause of the fire may have been a technical defect in the vehicle, the police said in the evening.
The fire in a construction machine on Tuesday in the Mühlviertel also had a minor ending: a 60-year-old man was able to jump off his burning dumper and escaped unharmed.
