Because the drunk man is said to have hit vehicles with a belt, passers-by informed the police. Officers from the Storchengasse police inspection followed instructions from witnesses to a stairwell in a multi-party building, where the drunkard is said to be staying. While the officers confronted the man with the allegations, he tried to reach into his fanny pack. Since the police officers assessed the situation as dangerous, they took the fanny pack and snatched it from the man.
At the same time, the man took a few steps away from the officers, then turned around again, suddenly had a pistol in his hand and shot the police officers several times. They took cover and called for reinforcements. In the meantime, the drunk managed to escape from the stairwell.
Hidden between dumpsters
The police followed the man to a garage entrance. Since there was apparently no longer any possibility of escape, they secured the area with the help of other police forces. A little later, police officers from the police service dog unit and the special unit WEGA searched the garage. Officials from WEGA finally found the man lying on the ground between garbage containers, he had hidden the pistol under himself. The perpetrator was arrested and the pistol secured.
The perpetrator, a 32-year-old Serb, was arrested. The motive is so far unclear, an interrogation has not yet taken place because the accused was under the influence of alcohol. He was not legally in possession of the pistol, the police said in a broadcast. The Serb may have fired a shot before that, in a taxi. A bullet hole was found in the door. The investigators assume that the shot in the taxi was also fired by the accused.
