Three dead: Arrested smuggler confesses

During an interrogation, he stated that he panicked at the police check and fled. Then he ended up in the ditch with the van. Two of the three autopsies have now been completed – the refugees died in the accident. On Saturday, a suspected smuggler fleeing a police checkpoint on the A6 caused an accident with three dead and 17 injured refugees. The thirty-year-old Russian was arrested and taken into custody in Eisenstadt Prison. The man, who has a French residence permit, is being investigated for smuggling in a criminal organization and multiple grossly negligent killings and bodily harm under particularly dangerous conditions.

As a spokeswoman for the Eisenstadt public prosecutor’s office explained to the APA on Wednesday, the driver said that he saw the police at the border crossing and panicked. He accelerated his vehicle, was followed by the officers and ended up in a ditch while trying to escape. “He does not deny that he is the driver,” said the spokeswoman. A mobile phone was also secured from him, which is now being evaluated. The investigators are hoping for more information about the towing from the data. The injured migrants are also questioned about this.

No signs of asphyxiation

They are also expected to provide information on the identity of the deceased – two men and a woman. The autopsies of the two men have already been completed and it is now clear that they were killed in the accident. “You had an intact circulatory system before the accident. There were no signs of asphyxiation,” the prosecutor explained. One of the two men may have been “very young”, but the exact age is not yet known. All three people died at the scene of the accident, two before the rescue workers arrived.
