Helmets are compulsory for e-scooter drivers

After a 13-year-old who was traveling with an e-scooter was hit by a car and died in Bad Waltersdorf last weekend, road safety experts are now calling for helmets to be compulsory for the e-scooters. This applies – since e-scooters are on an equal footing with bicycles in the road traffic regulations – up to the age of 12.

One of the proponents of compulsory helmets is Armin Kaltenegger from the Road Safety Board. In addition, the scooters are not yet suitable for young children, so a small, conventional scooter that you can drive on the street is recommended first, says the expert in an interview with ORF Styria.

Elisabeth Fanninger from the association “Big ones protect small ones” is also in favor of the helmet: “We recommend wearing a well-fitting helmet at any age. And you should find out where you can ride scooters.”
