A powerful explosion rocked a mosque in Kabul, Afghanistan, during night prayers on Wednesday. A Taliban intelligence official told Reuters that at least 35 people were killed or injured, but the number could rise.
The Kabul emergency hospital said on Twitter that it had taken in 27 patients injured in the blast, including a seven-year-old child.
Witnesses told Reuters that a powerful explosion was heard in an area north of Kabul, shattering windows in nearby buildings. Ambulances arrived at the scene.
“There was an explosion at the mosque… people were injured in the explosion, but the numbers are still unclear,” Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran told Reuters.
The imam of the mosque is among the dead. Local authorities are conducting investigations to establish responsibility.
