Gold and silver were followed by bronze yesterday – Jessica Pilz completed Austria’s medal set at the European Climbing Championships in Munich yesterday with bronze in the combination. The 25-year-old showed nerves in the final. After reaching the top of three out of four boulders, she came out on top in the lead, pushing past Germany’s Hannah Meul.
Initially, however, Pilz was not really happy about her perfect lead climbing performance. “Immediately after the top, I knew that this route was too easy. That’s why it was more trouble about the route setting than the top. It’s almost impossible to catch up in the lead,” explained Pilz.
The Slovenians Janja Garnbret and Mia Krampl, who celebrated a double victory, were in a class of their own. For Garnbret it was even the title hat-trick at these European Championships.
For the Lower Austrian Pilz it was her second medal in Munich after silver in the lead. From the Austrian point of view, Nicolai Uznik was responsible for the previous highlight with his title in bouldering. Today the climbing competitions on Munich’s Königsplatz will end with the men’s combination. In this, Jakob Schubert is another Austrian medal candidate. After his unfortunate fourth place in the lead, the Tyrolean still has a score to settle with this European Championship. At the Tokyo Olympics, he finished third in the combination. After that, the competition was reformed, and the speed discipline was removed from the station wagon. Munich was the premiere of the new format, which is also on the program for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. From Pilz’s point of view, there is still a need for optimization given that the lead route is too easy.
