The meadows are brown, the water is scarce: Upper Austria has been drained in recent weeks. Especially in the Innviertel and in the lake areas of the Salzkammergut, the motto is: less is more. This applies primarily to drinking water consumption in some communities. But help from above is on the way – from Northern Italy. Heavy thunderstorms were already brewing there during the night, the foothills of which will reach Upper Austria in the course of today. First in the form of denser clouds.
“They are the first signals. In the afternoon and especially in the evening thunderstorms are possible across the country, sometimes with heavy downpours,” says Christian Ortner, meteorologist at ZAMG.
“The rain is a blessing”
These thunderstorms bring the long-awaited cooling: because while it’s still hot today at up to 32 degrees, tomorrow 25 degrees will be the highest of feelings. In addition: little sun, brisk west wind and a lot of precipitation. “On Friday, heavy and persistent rain is to be expected. The precipitation will only subside in the late afternoon,” says Ortner. And: “This rain is a blessing for many regions”. In western Austria, on the other hand, it could already be a bit too much of a good thing.
The weekend also makes the past hot days seem far away: On Saturday there will be repeated rain showers, the westerly wind will remain brisk at around 23 degrees. On Sunday the sun is slowly gaining the upper hand again, from Monday there are signs that there will again be a clear influence of high pressure.
