Mozambican police arrest a man with cocaine hidden in 25 lanterns

Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) on Wednesday detained a citizen who tried to enter the country with cocaine hidden in 25 lanterns at Maputo International Airport, a spokesman for the organization told Lusa.

“After the searches, 25 flashlights were found, and inside was a powder that, when analyzed, tested positive for cocaine,” said Ilario Lola, citing the fact that the amount of the drug is still unknown.

The 43-year-old man from the Ivory Coast arrived from Brazil, where he allegedly obtained the drug, after making a stopover in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

When he arrived in Mozambique, he was intercepted immediately, Sernik’s spokesman said, citing the man denied he was the owner of the drug suitcase, claiming he was traveling to the country for tourism purposes.

According to the official, the arrest was the result of a joint effort with foreign authorities, including the Brazilian, who warned of the possible arrival of a suspect with drugs.

On August 5, Mozambican authorities announced the arrest of an Angolan who also tried to enter the country with 38 capsules of cocaine in his body.

A 37-year-old man, also from Brazil, was detained at Maputo International Airport.

Several international organizations designate Mozambique as a transit corridor for the international traffic of drugs destined for Europe and the United States of America, mainly heroin from Asia.
