An attack on a mosque left at least 21 dead

“Yesterday (Wednesday) there was an explosion in a mosque… during evening prayer. As a result, 21 of our citizens were martyred and 33 were injured,” said Kabul police spokesman, Khalid Zadranit’s a statement.

“The explosion was caused by explosives placed inside the mosque“, the spokesman told AFP.

Yet no group claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Italian NGO Emergency, which operates a hospital in Kabul, said on Wednesday it had received 27 blast victims, three of them dead. Among his patients were five children, one of them seven years old.

“Most of the patients we have received after the explosion in the mosque suffer shrapnel wounds and burns“, he detailed.

The mosque that was the target of the attacks is located in the sunni district northwest of Kabul, and also has a Koranic school.

On Thursday morning, the building, whose windows were broken, was secured by numerous taliban armed men, who were also present in the surrounding streets, to which they controlled access, according to AFP journalists.

Most of the attacks are claimed by IS, usually targeting minorities such as shiitesthe sufis or the Sikhsbut also against the Taliban.

Although both are radical Sunni Islamists, the Taliban and IS have become bitter rivals with major ideological and strategic differences.

Wednesday’s attack comes before an important meeting this Thursday of more than de 2,000 religious clerics and Taliban leaders in the southern city of kandaharthe cradle of the movement.
