Rapid in Conference League play-off only 1: 1 at FC Vaduz

In the first leg at FC Vaduz from Liechtenstein, the Feldhofer squad only drew 1-1 (0-1) on Thursday and could even consider themselves lucky with the result. Because especially in the first half, the Liechtensteiners clearly set the tone. Ferdy Druijf, who came on after the break, scored for Grün-Weiß in the 53rd minute.

The hosts deservedly took the lead in the 10th minute through Dario Ulrich. Vaduz had the game clearly under control, Rapid acted far too timidly in the first half and seemed listless. A higher deficit at the break would have corresponded more to the course of the game. Coach Ferdinand Feldhofer’s team looked like they had changed after the break, and Druijf’s equalizer isn’t the only testament to that. After that, both teams had their offensive actions, but it remained a draw.

Vaduz got off to a brilliant start. Vorarlberg’s Manuel Sutter hit the goal after 49 seconds, but luckily the Green-Whites saw it as offside. Then Niklas Hedl was able to stand out against Nicolas Hasler. After a combination on the left, however, it happened and the Rapid goalkeeper had no chance: Ulrich was right in the middle, as he was completely unguarded, and volleyed Fabio Fehr’s cross into the goal with his right.

Rapid had more possession of the ball and made the first combinations after about 15 minutes, but they proved to have little impact. There were no chances for Hütteldorfer, while on the other side Fehr (29th) shot just wide of the goal and Sutter (40th) was more or less shot by his strike partner Franklin Sasere. Rapid then had great luck just before the break when a Sutter shot after a Hedl excursion off the crossbar probably fell behind the goal line. In any case, the referee team did not score – there is no VAR support at this stage.

Feldhofer brought on Druijf, Yusuf Demir and Jonas Auer for Marco Grüll, Ante Bajic and Martin Koscelnik. And the changes paid off: After submission by Demir, who was strong at dribbling, Druijf took a shot from almost 20 meters into the far corner. As against Neftci Baku, the Dutchman, who had been injured for a long time, scored an important goal after coming on as a substitute. A week ago he scored in extra time to make it 2-0.

A pike header from Sutter (61′) showed that Vaduz could still be counted on. After a corner kick in the 65th minute, the Reds scored again – but again there was no recognition because Sutter Hedl, who was passively offside, is said to have obstructed the view. Rapid was now slightly overweight – only the ball-safe Demir tried it twice with shots – but again and again allowed dangerous moments in the back. So Rapid had to tremble to the end.
