The Ennstal holiday program offers many an exciting experience. The Steyr Tourism Association and the National Park region invite you to numerous attractions until September 11th. Locals and guests alike can experience something exciting every day of the week. On Mondays, for example, taster climbing is the order of the day in the hall or on the rock. Ranger tours in the Limestone Alps are offered on Tuesdays and Sundays. The Nagelschmiedweg and the Losenstein castle ruins can be explored on Thursdays. Every Wednesday you can learn something about the centuries-old art of knife making in the valley of the Feitelmacher in Trattenbach. The museum is also open to visitors on other days. Eleven children and adults were guests at the OÖN Local Eye Appearance as prospective Feitelmacher.
Hilde Bayer, who herself comes from a Messerer family, infected the participants with her enthusiasm during the tour. Along the 1.5 kilometer tour, various workshops awaited a visit. The last active Feitel production facility also opened its doors.
Incidentally, the term Feitel, which people still like to use today, comes from folding. “Such a Feitel should last a lifetime. But people didn’t get that old in the past,” explains Bayer with a wink. The knives themselves used to be more susceptible to rust. “I remember that when I was a child myself. The knives were stuck in bacon overnight so that they didn’t start to rust,” said the woman from Trattenbach. Today, the town of Trattenbach only has around 340 inhabitants; it used to have more than 1,000. Feitel production began in the small town at the beginning of the 16th century. At peak times there were 18 independent Feitel companies.
