On August 19, 1982, the OÖ Nachrichten reported on considerations for the division of space. As more and more countries penetrated into space and an increasing militarization of space took place, it was considered to create sovereign spheres there for individual states. “The main idea is to stake out sovereign areas and neutral zones on the individual celestial bodies,” wrote the OÖN.
This should avoid future conflicts between states. Missile programs and other potential military uses of space worried the United Nations. But without reason: Space still belongs to all states and may only be explored and used for peaceful purposes.
